Guangzhou demographic analysis and economy overview

Guangzhou is the most populous city in the Guangdong province and the third most populous metropolitan area in mainland China. Total population of Guangzhou has been increasing from 7.1 million in 201 to 7.7 million in 2007- reflecting an 8.5% growth in population during the period of six years. The growth has put rising pressure on the city’s resources, environment, social and economic development. In the 2020 City Development Strategy, Guangzhou has planned to lower the population density and enhanced the living environment in the old city centre.

Guangzhou nominal GDP has grown by 2.6 times from 268.6 RMB billion in 2001 to 710.9 RMB billion in 2007, ranking number three of the major cities in China. Communications, automotive, petrochemical and electronics manufacturing are the pillars industries of Guangzhou. In addition, the development of high-tech industries is accelerating. The nominal GDP is expected to continue its upward trend as Guangzhou has accumulated sufficient resources and development experiences to tide over the current economic crisis. Furthermore, the upcoming 16th Asian Games in 2010 provide Guangzhou with growth opportunities.

Similarly, Guangzhou’s nominal GDP per capita has experienced a 2.4 times increase from 37, 690 RMB in 2001 to 91, 912 RMB in 2007. The GDP per capita would perhaps not continue to increase at a faster rate as the city has decided to hold growth to 12 percent as it shifts its focus from GDP expansion to achieving sustainable development. By doing so, Guangzhou hopes to achieve a balance between economic development and environmental protection.

Due to rapid economic growth and improved working efficiency, local tax revenue concerning foreigners has increased rapidly as well, amounting to 10.6 RMB billion, up by 24.8% relative to 2006. Other sources include business tax revenue; urban real estate tax revenue and land value-added tax revenue which have also contribute to the uprising trend in government finance revenue.

Guangzhou total investments in fixed assets have soared from 98 RMB billion in 2001 to 186 RMB billion in 2007, an increase of 89.8% for a period of six years. The trend is expected to persist as the government has continue to put in great efforts in developing new high-tech industries such as the construction of national high-tech bases for such sectors as software, electronics and information, biomedicines and online gaming and animation. Moreover, increasing number of enterprises has established their research and development institutes in Guangzhou. Subsequently, there are also growth prospects in urban environment construction which includes the expansion project of Baiyun International Airport, construction of new passenger station of Guangzhou Railway, highways, expressways etc.
