Hebei demographic analysis and economy overview
Hebei province is one of the densely populated
provinces in China. The density is higher in the
south and central regions, lower in the north and
west regions of the province. Total population of
Hebei has increased from 65.3 million in 1997 to
69.4 million in 2007, representing a 6.3% growth
over a period of ten years. The Han nationality
makes up 96% of Hebei's population.

billion in 1997 to 1, 371 RMB billion in 2007,

The provincial industry production surged with the
development of equipment manufacturing and high tech
industries. Consumer markets in Hebei are also
thriving. In 2004, total retail sales of consumer
goods reached 252 RMB billion, up 15.8% relative to
previous year. In 2006, the provincial revenue
income has risen to 104 RMB billion, reflecting a
33% relative to 2005.

Nominal GDP per
capita of Hebei has risen steadily from 6, 000 RMB in 1997 to 19, 700 RMB in
2007, representing a 3.3 times increase over a period of ten years. In 2004,
the per capita disposable income per capita of urban residents is 8, 000
RMB, an increase of 9.8%. The annual net income per capita of rural
residents has risen to 3, 171 RMB- an increase of 318 RMB, reflecting the
most rapid growth since 1997.

The manufacturing
sector is one of the vital sectors for Hebei’s economic growth. This is
because in 2007, nearly half (48%) of Hebei’s GDP is derived from the
manufacturing sector. Hebei’s key industries include textiles, coal,
steel, iron, chemical production, petroleum, ceramics and foodstuff industries. Subsequently, the service sector
contributes 34% of the GDP while the agricultural sector makes up 13% of the
GDP. Hebei’s main agricultural productions are grain and
cotton. Hebei is responsible for most cotton produced in China.

Hebei’s total
investments in fixed assets have jumped by 4.8 times from 143 RMB billion in
1997 to 688 RMB billion in 2007. Hong Kong is the largest source of foreign
investment in Hebei. Hebei provides opportunities for investment in various
sectors such as finance, insurance, telecommunications, tourism, legal
affairs consulting, infrastructure construction and environmental
protection. Furthermore, the local government has decided to develop
equipment manufacturing sector, making it into one of the pillar industries
of Hebei province. In addition, there are plans to further expand Hebei as a
base for both ocean engineering equipment manufacturing and ship building
and repairing. Thus, providing additional opportunities for would -be
investors to tap on.
