Sichuan demographic analysis and economy overview
Total population of Sichuan province is on decline
from 84.3 million in 1997 to 81.3 million in 2007,
representing a 3.6 times decrease over a period of
ten years. Due to rapid urbanization, there is a
growing trend of rural workers moving to the cities.
Furthermore, the province is facing the problems of
burgeoning ageing population. This would not be
beneficial for the province as the population is
said to be ageing too early. In a population report written in 2006, Chen Zi, chief of the department of
Population and Social Science mentioned, “Sichuan
has yet to set up a sound social insurance system
for old people, build more old people's homes and
ensure adequate medical facilities.”

earthquake has dampened the development of the
tourism industry, which resulted in a 10.3% decline
in revenue in 2008. The economy of the province is
expected its momentum as the government would focus
in recovery work and increasing domestic demands.
