Haikou’s nominal
GDP per capita has only grown by 6.4% from 24, 194 RMB in 2001 to 25, 741
RMB in 2007. This is largely due to the abrupt growth in population in 2003.
The 118% growth in population in 2003 has resulted in a fall in GDP per
capita in that year as the increase in nominal GDP is unable to match the
rate of growth of the population. However, subsequently, there is a rebound
and the nominal GDP per capita has been on an upward trend till 2007, up by
56.6% from 2003.
