Haikou’s (capital of Hainan Province) population has been increasing since 2001 from 0.6 million to 1.5 million in 2007. However, it is noted that that is a sharp decrease of 13.4% in 2007 relative to 2006. The total population covers an area of 2, 305 square kilometers. In 2006, urban population comprises of 865, 000 people while rural population comprises of 608, 000 people. Due to economic growth, reform and immigration, population growth in the next few years is highly probable.

Haikou exports large amount of agricultural products, cinnamon, sugar, tobacco, rice, livestock as well as many minerals, petro-chemical products and rubber. Ever since China carried out its reform and opening-up policies, together with the establishment of Hainan Special Economic Zone, economy in Haikou has shown remarkable progress. Haikou’s nominal GDP has been on an upward trend from 14.6 RMB billion to 39.4 RMB in 2007. During this period of time, the nominal GDP has raised by 170%. Currently, Haikou has been classified as one of the leading cities in China.

Haikou’s nominal GDP per capita has only grown by 6.4% from 24, 194 RMB in 2001 to 25, 741 RMB in 2007. This is largely due to the abrupt growth in population in 2003. The 118% growth in population in 2003 has resulted in a fall in GDP per capita in that year as the increase in nominal GDP is unable to match the rate of growth of the population. However, subsequently, there is a rebound and the nominal GDP per capita has been on an upward trend till 2007, up by 56.6% from 2003.
