Jinan demographic analysis and economy overview

 

Jinan’s (capital city of Shandong Province) population has grown by 5.3% from 5.7 million in 200 to 6.0 million in 2007. Jinan covers an area of 8, 200 square kilometers with 3, 300 square kilometers of urban area. There are 48 nationalities in Jinan. In 2007, 98.2% of the people are of the Han nationality, and the minorities account for 1.8% of the population.

Jinan’s nominal GDP has leaped upwards from 1066 RMB billion in 2001 to 256.3 RMB billion in 2007- reflecting a 140% growth over the period of six years. In 2006, primary industries including agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry and the fisheries represented 6.6% of Jinan’s nominal GDP; secondary and value-added industries and construction represented 45.9%, while tertiary sector represented 47.5%.This has proven the heavy weights placed on both the secondary and tertiary sectors for Jinan’s economic development. In 2007, total imports and exports amounted to 218 billion US dollars, an increase of 41.7% from 2006. With the increasing pool of high-quality labor resources and focus on technology intensive industries, continuous growth in Jinan’s nominal GDP would be highly probable.

GDP capita of Jinan has risen from 18, 700 RMB in 2001 to 42, 400 RMB in 2007- a 2.2 times jump during this period of time. This trend is expected to continue to rise in the next period. Standard of living will also increase as Jinan not only gets to enjoy progress in the economic aspect, other areas such as education, science, medical and sports are advancing simultaneously, thus, having an all-rounded development.

The largest increase occurred in 2007 with a 22% growth rate relative to the previous year. Jinan’s total investment in fixed assets have escalated from 26 RMB billion in 2001 to 115 RMB billion in 2007- a 4.4 times increase in the period of six years. One of the factors for the upward trend is attributed to Jinan having an abundance of natural resources such as: land, minerals, water and biological resources. Furthermore, Jinan has developed a complex transportation system consisting of railways, international airlines and expressways. In addition, Jinan’s vast number of colleges, universities and science research institutions are able to provide the necessary skilled manpower. Besides, being one of the nine finance centers of China, Jinan has the capabilities to provide strong financial support for the investors. Major industries for investments in Jinan would include: traffic equipment, electronic information, metallurgy, petrochemical, mechanical equipment, food and medicine, construction and the service industries.
