Kunming demographic analysis and economy overview
The total population of Kunming (capital of Yunnan
province) has grown by 6.1% from 4.9 million in 2001
to 5.2 million in 2007. In Kunming, there are about
26 Chinese minority ethnic groups living in or
around the city. Of the city’s total population,
about six percent are Chinese ethnic minority groups
which include Yi, Bai, Miao, Dai, Han, and Hui.
Kunming’s population covers a total area of 21, 501
square kilometers and its urban area covers 6, 200
square kilometers. Relative to the other cities of
China, Kunming has a more balanced male-to-female
ratio of 1.05 to 1.

Nominal GDP of Kunming has increased steadily from
67.3 RMB billion in 2001 to 140.5 RMB billion in
2007- a 2.1 times increase during a period of six
years. The five pillar industries of Kunming
include: cigarettes, machinery and electronics,
bio-resources, information as well as trade and
tourism. In addition, the salt and phosphate mines around Kunming are some of
China's best. The machinery industry forms the vital
part of the industries in Yunnan. The output value
in Kunming occupies a quarter of the total
industrial output in Yunnan province.

GDP per capita of
Kunming has doubled from 13, 806 RMB in 2001 to 27, 140 RMB in 2007. The
largest increase occurred in 2007 with a 16% growth rate relative to the
previous year. In 2007, disposable income per capita within Kunming's urban
areas grew to 12,083 RMB, up 6.1 percent over 2006, while Kunming's rural
net income grew by 7.1 percent, with the average farmer outside of the city
earning 4,003 RMB compared to the previous year. GDP per capita is expected
to continue to rise as there are many development plans install for Kunming
such as the Kunming Reform lead by both Party Secretary Qiu and Mayor and
Deputy Party Secretary Zhang.

Due to reform and
opening up its economy to the rest of the world, expansion of market an
tertiary sector, together with Kunming’s heavy focus on commerce, tourism,
information, real estate, services, trade and market development, Kunming’s
economic development has been accelerating. This has also lead to government
finance revenue of Kunming to jump by 2.2 times from 6 RMB billion in 2001
to 13 RMB billion in 2007.

Total investments
in fixed assets in Kunming has surged from 26 RMB billion in 2001 to 82 RMB
billion in 2007- a threefold increase in a period of six years. This trend
is expected to continue as there is a great number upcoming projects that
provide opportunities for growth such as the construction of Kunming Airport
Economic Zone, South Asian Gate, Dianchi Lake Water Treatment etc. These
investments aim to transform Kunming into a regional international
ecological city.
