Nanchang demographic analysis and economy overview
Population of Nanchang- capital of Jiangxi Province
has grown significantly by 11.4% from 4.4 million in
2001 to 4.9 million in 2007. About 1 million of the
total population belongs to transient population and
2.3 million are urban permanent residents. The
population covers an area of 7, 402 square
kilometers, 617 square kilometers of which is urban
area.

Nominal GDP of Nanchang has soared from 48.6 RMB
billion in 2001 to 139 RMB billion in 2007- a 2.8
times growth in a period of six years. In 2006, the
GDP contribution ratio of the primary industries was
6.5%; secondary industries 54.4% and tertiary
industries 39.1%. More than half of the GDP
constitutes to secondary industries reflecting the
significance of manufacturing in Nanchang’s economy.
Key industries of Nanchang includes: photovoltaic,
aviation, electromechanical, LED, automobile
manufacturing industries. It is also noted that The
Ford Motor Company, in a joint venture with
Jiangling Motors since 1997, has a plant which
assembles the Ford Transit van in Nanchang.

Nanchang’s
nominal GDP per capita has increased by 2.6 times from 11, 033 RMB in 2001
to 28, 290 RMB in 2007. Not only is there tremendous growth in the material
aspect of Nanchang’s population, progress in the non-material aspect has
also proven to be remarkable as well. This can be evident when Nanchang has
been awarded titles such as “One of the World Top 10 Dynamic Cities” US News
Weekly, “A National Hygienic City”, “One of the Best Places for Living in
China” since 2007. Thus, it can be seen that Nanchang’s standard of living
has been constantly improving over the years.

Since the reform
and opening up, rapid industrialization, urbanization and
internationalization has lead to Nanchang’s government financed leaping by
multiple times from 2 RMB billion in 2001 to 9 RMB billion in 2007. The
trend is expected to carry on as Nanchang’s economy is developing rapidly.

Nanchang total
investments in fixed assets have shot up from 7 RMB billion in 2001 to 82
RMB billion in 2007- a 11.7 times expansion in a period of six years. This
has proven the fact Nanchang investment environment has been advancing
rapidly. The favorable conditions are largely due to its geographical
location, abundant and skilled human resource, preferential policies and an
excellent transport system. There are many upcoming projects that provide
space of growth for Nanchang’s investment landscape. A case in point-
Nanchang High-tech Zone is planning to construct an aviation industrial city
to transform Nanchang into a major production base of
aircraft, international aviation industry subcontracting production base. In
addition, there are upcoming plans to provide support to the photovoltaic
industry development; Nanchang will grant various preferential policies in
terms of lower administrative fees, improvement in transportation networks,
building of factories etc.
