Xining demographic analysis and economy overview

 

Total population of Xining (capital of Qinghai Province) has grown from 2 million in 2001 to 2.2 million in 2007, reflecting a 10% increase over the years. Among the total population, the urban population consists of 1.3 million people, while the rural population is made up of 849, 000 people. Xining consists of approximately 35 groups of minorities such as Hui, Tu, Tibetan, Mongolian, Manchu, Salar etc, constituting to 25.6% of the total population. In 2007, the birth rate of the city is 10.9% while the death rate is 4.3%. The natural population growth rate is 6.6%.

Nominal GDP of Xining has leaped by 3.3 times from 10.4 RMB billion in 2001 to 34.2 RMB billion in 2007. Xining’s main industries include: Electro-Mechanical, chemicals, construction materials metallurgy, foodstuffs and pharmaceuticals industries. In 2006, the economic contribution of primary industries to the total GDP is 4.4%; secondary industries 49% while tertiary industries contributes 46.7% to the total GDP.

With the incorporation of the ‘ West Development Campaign ' and the establishment of major projects like Qing-Tibetan Railway, Xining will further showcase its capabilities for advancement in the next period of time. Government finance revenue of Xining has doubled from 1 RMB billion in 2001 to 2 RMB billion in 2007. Xining strives to develop into a modern and central city on Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. The increasing revenue would be used to further boost the urban infrastructure and ecological environmental construction so as to quicken the process of industrialization and urbanization of the city.

Xining’s total investments in fixed assets has climbed by 2.6 times from 7 RMB billion in 2001 to 18 RMB billion in 2007. The largest increase occurred in 2007 with a growth rate of 27% relative to the previous years. Xining’s government has continuously strengthened the city’s infrastructure. For example, in 2006, Xining has invested in urban construction which comprises of upgrading of the water supply and drainage systems, rebuilding of sewage disposal plants etc. The growing number of new infrastructures would provide the necessary foundation to attract investors into the city.
