In 2007, China’s top importing provinces are
Guangdong, Jiangsu and Beijing. Guangdong imports
constitutes to27.7% of China’s total imports
amounting to 26.5 USD billion. Jiangsu’s imports
made up of 15.3%- 14.5 USD billion, while Beijing
imports 14.4 USD billion constituting to 15.1% share
of China’s total imports. These three provinces’
imports amount to nearly 60% of China’s expenditure.
During the period 2001 to 2007, Guangdong’s imports
have remained the highest among other provinces.
However, it is noted that recently, many factories
in Guangdong has shut down due to falling demand
from Western customers and the global financial
crisis. Thus, this possibly will lead to a decrease
in the imports of goods in the next period.

Using China’s cities as classification, the top three importing cities in
2007 are Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen. Shenzhen imports make up of 12.5%
share of China’s total imports having value of 11.9 USD billion. Beijing’s
major industries include woolen textiles, electronics and organic chemicals.
Due to this “composition” of industries, with a high weight age in the
manufacturing sectors relative to other parts of China, Beijing imports the
largest amount of commodities mainly consisting of industrial equipment,
textiles, light industrial products and chemicals.
