Anhui demographic analysis and economy overview
Within the period 1997-2007, the population has
grown by 5.4% from 61.3 million (ranking 8th in
China) in 1997 to 64.6 million in 2004. However, in
the subsequent years, there is a declining trend to
61.2 million people in 2007, representing a drop by
5.3% in a period of 3 years. In 2007, urban
residents make up 38.7% of the total Anhui’s
population. The Han makes up the vast majority of
the population while the She and Hui nationalities are the two largest groups of
minorities. The total population covers an area
of 139, 400 square kilometers. Currently, the
population faces the problems of gender ration
imbalance and ageing issues.

Nominal GDP of Anhui has been on a rising trend from
267 RMB billion in 1997 to 736 RMB billion in 2007,
representing a 2.8 times jump during this period of
time. In 2007, the added value of primary industries
contributes approximately 121 RMB billion, up 4.1%
since 2006; secondary industries contribute 328 RMB
billion, up 19.3% while tertiary industries make up
285 RMB billion, up by 12.3%. The private sector has
been developed extensively with the number of newly
founded private enterprises reached 17,000 in 2005.
Besides, some breakthroughs have been made in the
aspect of local financial reform.

Anhui’s nominal
GDP per capita has risen from 4360 RMB billion in 1997 to 12, 000 RMB
billion in 2007, representing a 2.8 times growth over a period of ten
years. Not only GDP per capita is on an upward trend, financial revenue has
risen by 34.4%, average per capita salary of on-the-job employees has
increased by 25.6% while the rural annual net income per capita has climbed
by 18.4%, signifying rapid progress in the province economy and standard of
living of the population.

In 2007, Anhui’s
GDP mainly derived from both the manufacturing and service sectors
constituting to 37% and 39% of the total GDP respectively. Anhui’s equipment
manufacturing industry centre on the manufacturing of engineering machinery,
electric appliances and automobiles, with Wuhu city being one of the key air
conditioner production bases in China. As for service industries, finance,
insurance and real estate are the key aspects that fuel the growth of the
service industries.

Total investments
in fixed assets of Anhui province has surged from 68 RMB billion in 1997 to
509 RMB billion in 2007 by 7.5 times over a period of ten years. Foreign
investments largely derived from Hong Kong, Germany, Singapore, Japan and
UK. Foreign projects mainly dwelt with machineries, electronics, textiles,
chemicals and metallurgy. World top 500 enterprises such as Sanyo,
Citigroup, Hitachi, Mitsubishi and Siemens have invested in Anhui
province. Hefei is one of the major cities to draw foreign investments.
