Gansu demographic analysis and economy overview
Total population of Gansu has grown by 5.2% from
24.9 million in 1997 to 26.2 million in 2007. Gansu
is a multi-ethnic province with 55 nationalities
living in Gansu, totaling to 2, 400, 000 people,
representing 9.2% of the total Gansu’s population. The expected average life span is approximately
70.4 years. The province population is unevenly
distributed and population density differs greatly.

Since China’s implementation of reform and opening
up to the outside world, Gansu has made rapid
development of its economy. Nominal GDP of Gansu
province has climbed from 78.1 RMB billion in 1997
to 227.7 RMB billion in 2007, representing a 2.9
times increase over a period of ten years. Gansu is
one of the major producers of traditional Chinese
herbal medicine in China, offering more than 9, 500
types of herbal medicine. In addition, Gansu is rich
in natural resources. This is because there are
approximately 81 types of minerals have been
discovered within Gansu, among which 11 types are
ranked first in China. Gansu’s key industries
include: petroleum and chemicals, non-ferrous
metals, mechanical and electronics, energy, building
materials, foodstuffs and pharmaceuticals
industries.

Gansu’s nominal
GDP per capita has tripled from 3133 RMB in 1997 to 10, 326 RMB in 2007. In
2004, Income for both urban and rural residents has increased steadily with
the disposable income reaching 7, 320 RMB, an increase of 10%, relative to
the previous year. Farmers’ net income reached 1, 840 RMB, up 10% from 2003.
GDP per capita is expected to rise as continuous efforts have been made in
improving infrastructure facilities and the ecological environment.
Advantages in key industries have been strengthened. Furthermore, tertiary
industries of Gansu province have also been developing rapidly.

In 2007,
manufacturing and service sectors are the key sectors that in the economic
contribution of the province’s nominal GDP. Both the service and
manufacturing sectors contributes 39% to the total GDP of Gansu province,
while the agricultural sector contributes 14% of the total GDP. Construction
sector constitutes the least portion, representing 8% of the total GDP.

In recent years,
Gansu has made use of the strategy of large-scale development of western
region adopted by the central government. This has resulted in Gansu’s total
investments in fixed assets surging from 24 RMB billion in 1997 to 130 RMB
billion in 2007, reflecting a fivefold increase over a period of ten years.
Furthermore, Gansu focused heavily on social development which leads to
speeding up of construction of infrastructures. One added incentive for
investors to invest n Gansu is that Gansu has strong scientific and
educational capabilities which provide abundant supply of skilled human
resources for utilization.
