Guangxi demographic analysis and economy overview
Total population of Guangxi province has grown by
1.4% from 46.3 million in 1997 to 47.7 million in
2007. Besides the Han nationality, there are 48
ethnic groups such as Zhuang, Yao, Miao, Tong,
Maonan, Yi, Shui etc. Population of ethnic
minorities accounts for 38% of total population. The
population of Zhuang nationality consists of 16.2
million people, accounting for 33% of total
population in Guangxi province.

Nominal GDP of Guangxi has climbed y 3.2 times from
181.7 RMB billion in 1997 to 595.6 RMB billion in
2007. The rapid growth is largely attributed to the
development of five economic zones- Southern Guangxi
Coastal , Central Guangxi , Northern Guangxi,
Eastern Guangxi and Western Guangxi Economic Zone.
Each economic zone focuses on different aspects of
the economy. For example, the Eastern Guangxi
Economic Zone focuses on modern agriculture,
township enterprises and export-oriented industries
while the Central Guangxi Economic Zone specializes
on industrial development. One of the main
strategies is to tap on the geographical advantages
of the coastal and border cities to expand commerce
and trade with other economies.

Guangxi’s nominal
GDP per capita has tripled from 3, 922 RMB in 1997 to 12, 491 RMB in 2007.
Disposable income per capita has been growing steadily since 2000. In 2005,
Guangxi is ranked 12th in terms of annual disposable income per capita. GDP
per capita is expected to continue its upward trend as Guangxi intensifies
efforts in improving its traffic infrastructure so as to better facilitate
in regional cooperation between countries and other provinces.

In 2007, the
major contributors to Guangxi’s nominal GDP are the service and
manufacturing sectors, representing 38% and 35% of the total GDP
respectively. Major manufacturing industries in Guangxi include
automobiles, heavy mining machinery, electrical and electronic equipment s,
instruments and apparatus, packing machinery, metallurgy, agricultural
machinery, shipbuilding machinery and craning machinery. Guangxi- a major
agricultural province which contributes 21% to Guangxi’s GDP, is plentiful
in agricultural products such as south sub-tropical fruits, vegetables,
sugarcane, hemp crops, silkworm, medicinal crops, perfume crops and aquatic
products.

Guangxi’s total
investments in fixed assets have surged by 6.1 times from 48 RMB billion in
1997 to 294 RMB billion in 2007. There are many opportunities and prospects
for investors as in the areas of agriculture, forestry, water conservancy,
power generation, telecommunications, tourism, trade, urban development,
environmental protection, science and technology. Furthermore, Guangxi’s
government has pledged 100 RMB billion worth of investments over the next
few years for constructing and revamping 2, 500 km of railways to form a
transportation network hub in the region.
