Guizhou demographic analysis and economy overview
Guizhou’s total population has grown from 36.1
million in 1997 to 37.6 million in 2007, reflecting
a 4.2% growth over a period of ten years. Guizhou is
a multiethnic province with minority groups such as
Yao, Miao, Yi, Qiang, Dong, Zhuang, Buyi, Bai, Tujia,
Gelao and Hui accounting for more than 36.8% of the
total population of Guizhou.

Although Guizhou is a relatively poor and
undeveloped province, having a small economy
relative to other coastal provinces, nominal GDP of
Guizhou has jumped from 79.3 RMB billion in 1997 to
274.2 RMB billion in 2007, representing a 3.4 times
increase over a period of ten years. In 2007, retail
sales of consumer goods of Guizhou has grown by
19.1% to 82.2RMB billion. Guizhou’s major export
markets include: US, Vietnam, Japan and Australia
while its key export products comprise of machinery
and equipments, chemicals products, base metal
products and minerals.

Guizhou’s
economic and social development has been developing rapidly. Its nominal GDP
per capita has risen from 2, 200 RMB in 1997 to 7, 300 RMB, representing a
3.3 times growth during this period of time. In 2007, disposal income per
capita of urban household is 10, 700 RMB, up 17.1% relative to the previous
year. The trend is expected to carry on as the government has been putting
in place numerous policies for future development.

In 2007,
Guizhou’s service sector contributes the most to its GDP amounting to 42% of
Guizhou’s GDP. Subsequently, the manufacturing sector makes up 37% of the
GDP. The five key industries of Guizhou includes electric power, tobacco,
coal, beverage and chemical production industries having added value of 56.4
RMB billion. In addition, Guizhou possesses three manufacturing bases
specializing in aerospace, aviation and electronics. Guizhou’s agricultural
sector contributes to 14% of the total GDP. Main agricultural products
comprise of corn, rice, tobacco, tubers and rapeseeds. Guizhou’s total
output of tobacco is ranked second in China.

Guizhou’s total
investment in fixed assets have surged by 6.8 times from 22 RMB billion in
1997 to 149 RMB billion in 2007. In 2005, 100 RMB billion has been invested
in fixed assets, among which investment in real estate development accounts
for 15 RMB billion. Using economical sectors as classification, 2 billion is
invested in primary industries, 42 RMB billion in secondary industries while
57 RMB billion is invested in tertiary industries. Foreign investors have
vast prospects in the following industries: automobile, tourism, textiles,
food-processing, medicines and health products industries.
