Heilongjiang demographic analysis and economy overview
Total population of Heilongjiang province has grown
from 37.5 million in 1997 to 38.2 million in 2007,
representing a 1.9% growth over the years. The total
population has remained relatively constant from
2001 to 2007. The Han Chinese constitutes to the
largest proportion of the population, while the
Manchu forms the largest portion of the minorities
in the province.

Heilongjiang’s economy has been on a upward trend.
Nominal GDP has climbed from 270.8 RMB billion in
1997 to 706.5 million in 2007, reflecting a 2.6
times increase over a period of ten years. In 2005,
total foreign trade volume of Heilongjiang province
reached USD 9.57 billion, up by 40.9% relative to
the previous year. Foreign investments realized in
monetary terms has amounted to US$1.52 billion- an
increase of 5.3% from 2004.

GDP per capita of
Heilongjiang province has increased from 7, 200 RMB in 1997 to 18, 500 RMB
in 2007, reflecting a 2.6 times growth over the years. In 2005, disposable
income per capita of urban residents reached 8, 273 RMB, an increase of
10.7% relative to the previous year. This is largely due to the growth in
wages, business income and income derived from properties. Similarly, the
net income per capita of rural residents has increased by 7.2% to 3, 200 RMB
in 2005.

The manufacturing
sector constitutes to the largest portion to the total GDP of Heilongjiang
province. In 2007, the manufacturing sector makes up 47% of the total GDP.
Major industries of the province includes: assembling, petrol-chemistry,
energy, food, pharmaceutical and wood processing industries. Heilongjiang is
home to China’s largest oil field- the Daqing Oil Field. Subsequently, the
service industries form 35% of the GDP while the agriculture sector makes up
13% of the total GDP. The province is also the nation’s largest producer of
soybeans.

Heilongjiang’s
total investments in fixed assets have surged from 67 RMB billion in 1997 to
283 RMB billion In 2007, reflecting a 4.2 times leap over a period of ten
years. Heilongjiang has reaped tremendous benefits from strategies of
revitalizing Northeast China’s traditional industry bases. The province has
also encouraged both foreign and private investors so as to attract more
capital flow. One such measure is to improve its market, legal and service
environment so as to protect investors' legal rights. In 2005, 23 of the
Fortune World Top 500 businesses have invested in Heilongjiang province.
