Hunan demographic analysis and economy overview
Total population of Hunan has been on a decline from
64.7 million in 1997 to 63.6 million in 2007,
representing a 1.7% drop over a period of ten years.
The urban population constitutes to 40.5% of the
population, while the rural population constitutes
59.6%. The minorities make up about 1.6% of the
total population which includes Tujia, Miao, Dong,
Yao, Hui, Bai, Zhuang, and Uighurs.

Economic structure of Henan province has been
constantly evolving. Besides, with the acceleration
of construction of key projects, increased inflow of
investments and thriving of domestic markets,
nominal GDP of Hunan province has raised from 299.3
RMB billion in 1997 to 920 RMB billion in 2007,
reflecting a threefold jump over the years. In 2007,
fiscal revenue has also increased by 21.4%,
amounting to 112 RMB billion.

Nominal GDP per
capita of Hunan province has tripled from 4, 630 RMB in 1997 to 14, 477 RMB
in 2007. In 2007, the annual disposable income per capita of urban
households is 12, 300 RMB, an increase of 11.2%, while the net income pr
capita of rural households reached 3, 900RMB, up 8.3% relative to the
previous year. All these indicators reflect a notable improvement in the
standards of living of the population in Henan province.

In 2007, 40% of
the total GDP is derived from the service sector, while 37% of the total GDP
is derived from the manufacturing sector. Hunan ten main industries include:
tobacco, steel, electricity, chemicals, nonferrous metals, building
materials, transportation equipment, agricultural and sideline processing,
specialized equipment manufacturing and petroleum processing industries.
Subsequently, agricultural sector contributes 17% to the GDP. Its grain
yield has been increasing steadily; furthermore, its output capacity of
staple and sideline products is among the top positions in China.

With economic
reform and opening up of the economy, total investments in fixed assets of
Hunan province has soared by 6.2 times from 67 RMB billion to 415 RMB
billion in 2007, reflecting a remarkable leap over a period of ten years. In
addition, the province is has a favorable investment environment with
strategic geographical location, abundance of natural resources, enhanced
infrastructures and advanced telecommunications, drawing investors to the
large market. There are numerous sectors that investors might consider. They
include: high tech, mining and quarrying and manufacturing industries
providing vast number of opportunities for growth and development.
