Inner Mongolia demographic analysis and economy overview
Total population of Inner Mongolia has increased
from 23.3 million in 1997 to 24.1 million in 2007,
representing a 3.4% growth over a period of ten
years. In 2006, the province has a birth rate of
9.87%, death rate of5.9% and a natural population
growth rate of 4.0%. The urban population
constitutes of 48.6% of the total population while
the rural population forms up the remaining portion.

In recent years, the province has adopted the
scientific development approach and implemented the
western development strategy, thus, nominal GDP of
Inner Mongolia has leaped from 110 RMB billion in
1997 to 609 RMB billion in 2007, representing a 5.5
times increase over a period of ten years. In 2005,
the total value of imports and exports reached
US$5.2 billion, up by 27.5% from 2004. With economic
progress, fiscal revenue of Inner Mongolia has also
swelled from 90, 000 RMB in 1947 to 71.3 RMB billion
in 2006, showing remarkable growth over the years.

Similar to the
trend of the province’s nominal GDP, nominal GDP per capita of Inner
Mongolia has jumped from 4, 730 RMB in 1997 to 25, 300 RMB in 2007,
reflecting a 5.4 times growth over the years. In 2005, the disposable income
per capita of urban residents is 9, 140 RMB, up 10.3% from 2004, while rural
residents' net income per capita is 2, 990 RMB, an increase of 10.5%
relative to the previous year. Additionally, both the urban and rural
residents’ expenditure per capita has risen by 11.4% and 17.5% respectively
from 2004. These indicators have reflected tremendous improvements have been
made to the standards of living of the population.

The manufacturing
sectors play a vital role in Inner Mongolia’s economy. In 2007, the
manufacturing industries contribute to 45% of the total GDP. Its main
industries include energy, chemicals, metallurgy, equipment manufacturing,
processing of farm produce and high tech industries. Standing in second
place, the service sector constitutes to 36% of the GDP. Wholesale and
retail trade and logistics form the two most important contributors to the
province’s service sector. Subsequently, the agricultural sector makes up of
12% of the total GDP. The sector mainly focuses on livestock husbandry.

Total investments
in fixed assets of Inner Mongolia has surged from 28 RMB billion in 1997 to
437 RMB billion in 2007, reflecting a 15.6 times jump over a period of ten
years. Majority of the investments are derived from Hong Kong, Taiwan,
Japan, US and Australia. There are 42 development zones in Inner Mongolia.
The 5 state-level development zones are Baotou Rare-Earth High-Tech
Industrial Development Zone, Erenhot Border Economic Cooperative Area,
Huhhot Economic and Technological Development Zone, Huhhot Export Processing
Zone and Man Zhouli Border Economic Cooperative Area. The largest being
Baotou Rare-Earth High-Tech Industrial Development Zone (49 square
kilometers) which focus on aluminum, copper, machinery , information
technology and biotechnology industries. These development zones have played
a major role in drawing investors to the province, thus, spurring the growth
of the economy.
