Jiangsu demographic analysis and economy overview
Total population of Jiangsu province has grown from
71.5 million in 1997 to 76.3 million in 2007,
representing a 6.7% growth over a period of ten
years. Jiangsu is the most densely populated
province in China with an average of 743 people per
square kilometer. Migration from other regions to
the urban areas of Jiangsu is the major reason for
the burgeoning of the population.

Jiangsu has a relatively strong economy in
comparison with the rest of the provinces in China,
having the third highest total GDP after Guangdong
and Shandong Province. Nominal GDP of Jiangsu
province has jumped from 668 RMB billion in 1997 to
2574 RMB billion in 2007, reflecting a 3.9 times
growth over the years. Provincial government has
taken an active role in expanding domestic demand.
Foreign direct investments, consumption and foreign
trade continue to grow rapidly.

Living standards
of Jiangsu province has shown notable improvements over the years. Jiangsu’s
nominal GDP per capita has increased by 3.6 times from 9, 300 RMB in 1997 to
33, 800 RMB in 2007. In 2005, disposable income per capita of urban
residents reached 12, 300 RMB, an increase of 15.2% from 2004, while rural
residents' net income per capita reached 5, 300 RMB, up 8.4% relative to the
previous year. In addition, consumption per capita of both urban and rural
residents climbed by 17.6% and 17.5% respectively from 2004.

Manufacturing
industries plays a crucial role in the economic development of the province.
In 2007, the manufacturing sector constitutes to more than half of the total
GDP. Its main industries include: textile and garment, metallurgy,
telecommunications, electrical machineries and materials, chemical and
equipments industries. Machinery industry of Jiangsu province is ranked
first in China. Besides, Jiangsu is the largest petrochemical industry base
of south China. Subsequently, the service sector makes up 37% of the total
GDP while the agricultural sector forms 7 % of the GDP. The major
agricultural products of Jiangsu province consist of grain, cotton, edible
oil and meat.

Total investments
in fixed assets of Jiangsu province has surged from 217 RMB billion in 1997
to 1, 227 RMB billion in 2007, representing a 5.7 times leap over a period
of ten years. Most investments are derived from Hong Kong, Singapore and
Japan. Foreign investments in Jiangsu province mainly focus on
telecommunication equipments, computer, machinery, chemical and textile
industries. There is also a growing trend in the amount of investments in
the services sector. In 2004, investments in real estate development for
the province have reached 127 RMB billion, up 50.3% from the previous year.
