Ningxia demographic analysis and economy overview
Total population of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region
has grown from 5.3 million in 1997 to 6.1 million in
2007, representing a 15.1% growth over a period of
ten years. The Hui is the predominant minority
group in the region accounting for approximately a
third of the region’s population. The urban
residents make up for 36.4% of the population while
the rural residents take up 63.6%.

Ningxia has the third smallest GDP among all the
provinces and regions of China. However, with the
adoption of Western China Development program,
Ningxia has gained significant improvement in the
economy. Thus, nominal GDP of Ningxia has jumped
from 21.1 RMB billion in 1997 to 88.9 RMB billion in
2007, reflecting a 4.2 times increase over the
years.

Living standards
of the population has improved notably as seen from the rise in the region’s
nominal GDP per capita, disposable income per capita and expenditure per
capita. Ningxia’s nominal GDP per capita has surged by 3.7 times from 3, 980
RMB in 1997 to 14, 580 RMB in 2007. In 2005, the disposable income per
capita of urban residents was 8, 090 RMB, an increase of 12.1% from 2004,
while rural residents' net income per capita was 2, 510 RMB, up 6.3% from
the previous year. Urban residents' per capita expenditure reached 6, 400
RMB, up 10% from 2004 while that of rural residents was 2, 090 RMB, an
increase of 8.7% relative to the previous year.

The manufacturing
sector plays a major role in the GDP growth of the region. In 2007, the
manufacturing sector contributes 43% of the region’s GDP. Ningxia’s main
industries consist of coal, electrical, metallurgical, chemical, food
processing, textile and paper making industries. Standing in second place,
the service sector contributes 38% to the region’s GDP. Sectors of
transportation, storage, postal services, wholesale and retail trade
constitutes to 17.5% of the share in the GDP, representing the leading
sectors among the services industries. Agriculture remains a vital mean of
livelihood of the region. Ningxia possess rich land resources, ideal
irrigation and sunshine conditions for the growing of crops. The
agricultural sector forms 11% of the GDP.

Ningxia’s total
investments in fixed assets have climbed from 9 RMB billion in 1997, to 60
RMB billion in 2007, reflecting a 6.7 times increase over the years. The
government has been actively encouraging investors to invest in the region.
The government has been optimizing the investment environment by creating an
efficient administrative environment, setting up favorable policies for the
operation of businesses and constantly upgrading its infrastructures for the
smooth operation of businesses of the various industries. There are vast
prospects in the areas of energy, agriculture and tourism sectors.
