Shaanxi demographic analysis and economy overview
Total population of Shaanxi province has grown from
35.7 million in 1997 to 37.5 million in 2007,
representing a 5% increase over a period of ten
years. In 2007, urban residents reached 15.2
million, comprising of40.6% of the total population,
while rural residents reached 22.3 million people,
constituting to 59.4% of the provincial population.

GDP of Shaanxi province has increased from 130 RMB
billion in 1997 to 546.6 RMB billion in 2007,
reflecting a 4.2 times growth over the years.
Shaanxi boasts rich energy resources such as coal,
gas, oil, salt etc. These resources would serve as
effective capital, bringing about substantial
benefits to the economy growth in the next period of
time.

living of the province has been on an upward trend with reference to the
province’s statistics such as nominal GDP per capita, disposable income per
capita and expenditure per capita. Shaanxi’s nominal GDP per capita has
quadrupled from 3, 640 RMB in 1997 to 14, 580 RMB in 2007. In 2007,
disposable income per capita of urban residents reached 1, 570 RMB, up 15.3%
from the previous year. In 2005, urban residents' expenditure per capita
reached 6, 660 RMB, growth of 5.8% from the previous year, while rural
residents' expenditure per capita was 1, 900 RMB, experienced an increase of
14.5% from 2004.

The manufacturing
sector play major role in the contribution to the province GDP. In 2007, the
manufacturing industries contributed nearly half to the total GDP, forming a
major portion of 46%. Its main industries include: machinery, textile,
electronics, aviation, fuel and power industries. Standing in second place,
the service sector contributes a proportion of 35% to the GDP. Shaanxi
functions as an vital area for scientific research and production.
Furthermore, tourism is crucial to the province’s economic contribution. The
agriculture sector contributes 11% to the GDP. The province produces mainly
agricultural products such as grain, vegetables, apple and Chinese
chestnuts. It is serves as the biggest fruits production and processing
centre.

Total investments
in fixed assets of Shaanxi province has leaped from 39 RMB billion in 1997
to 342 RMB billion in 2007, reflecting a remarkable increase of 8.7 times
over a period of ten years. In 2007, the major sources of foreign
investments were derived from Hong Kong, US and Singapore. World's top 500
enterprises such as Toshiba, Pepsi, McDonald's, Carrefour, BP, Cooper and
Nestle have invested in Shaanxi province due to its favorable investment
environment. Most of the investments are channeled to the manufacturing
sector.
