Xinjiang Imports and Exports
Xinjiang Autonomous Region has established trade and
economic relations with more than 147 countries and
regions in the world. Total imports and exports of
the region has been on a rising trend from US$ 1,
120 million in 1997 to US$ 12, 720 million in 2007,
representing a 12.2 times upsurge over a period of
ten years. In 2007, border trade constitutes a
substantial portion of the total trade volume,
amounting to US$ 9, 400 million, comprising of 68.6%
of total imports and exports.

Xinjiang’s total imports quadrupled from US$ 550
million in 1997 to US$ 2, 210 million in 2007. The
region’s major imported goods include: rolled
steel, crude oil, oil products and fertilizers and
medical equipment, while main imports sources are
derived from Kazakhstan, Russia and US.

The export
product mix has been constantly improving- from mainly primary products with
low added value to high value added products such as electromechanical and
precision instruments. Thus, total exports of Xinjiang Autonomous Region has
surged from US$ 570 million in 1997 to US$ 11, 500 million in 2007,
reflecting a 20.2 times jump over the years. The region’s key exported items
consist of tomato jam, cotton yarn, shoes and television sets. The major
exports destinations are Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Azerbaijan and
Russia.
