Yunnan demographic analysis and economy overview
Total population of Yunnan province has grown from
40.9 million in 1997 to 45.1 million in 2007,
reflecting a 10.3% increase over a period of ten
years. Yunnan has the highest number of ethnic
groups among all the provinces and autonomous
regions in China. Minorities such as Yi, Zhuang,
Miao, Dai, Hui, etc make up 38% of the total
provincial population.

Yunnan is relatively one of the country’s
undeveloped provinces having more poverty-stricken
counties as compared to other provinces and
regions. However, Yunnan province’s economy has been
developing steadily. Nominal GDP of Yunnan province
has been on a upward trend from 164 RMB billion in
1997 to 474 RMB billion in 2007, representing a 2.9
times growth over the years. The pillar industries
of Yunnan include: tobacco, mining, electricity,
bio-technology, pharmaceuticals and agriculture
industries.

Yunnan’s nominal GDP per capita has risen by 2.6 times from 4, 020 RMB in
1997 to 10, 500 RMB in 2007. In 2005, the disposable income per capita of
urban residents reached 9, 270 RMB, up 4.5% from the previous year, while
rural residents' net income per capita reached 2, 040 RMB- an increase of
6.5%. In addition, urban residents' expenditure per capita was 7, 000 RMB-
an increase of 2.3% from 2004 while that of rural residents was 1, 790 RMB-
growth of 13.9% from the previous year.

The service
sector plays a major role in the economic development of the province. In
2007, the service sector contributes 39 % to the provincial GDP. Standing in
second place, the manufacturing sector contributes 36% of the total. The
main manufacturing industries include: iron and steel production and
copper-smelting, commercial vehicles, chemicals, fertilizers, textiles and
optical instruments. Tobacco also forms as a major industry as it is the
largest industry in the province. The agricultural sector constitutes 18% to
the total provincial GDP. Its main agriculture products include: flowers,
tea leaves, fruits and vegetables.

Yunnan’s total
investment in fixed assets have jumped from 54 RMB billion in 1997 to 276
RMB billion in 2007, representing a 5.1 times growth over a period of ten
years. In 2006, production and supply of electricity, gas and water had the
highest amount of fixed asset investments amounting to 46.1 RMB billion.
Yunnan encourages investment in sectors such as energy, agriculture,
transportation, water conservation, power generation, metallurgy, chemical
industry, tourism, environmental protection and urban infrastructural
construction.
